Impact of Fostering on Children Permanently in the Home with Claudia Mercier, MSW

September 20, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Children who are permanent members of the family, through birth or adoption, are the unsung heroes of foster care. They often don’t have much say in the family’s decision to foster and are asked to share toys, space and parental attention. The benefits to them can be numerous and character forming. It is important to recognize, however, that there can also be a negative impact that can lead to resentment and disgruntlement when not tended to or acknowledged. This dynamic deserves attention, respect and understanding. Join us as we take a look at the critical role our permanent kids play and how we can maximize the chances that fostering is a positive experience for all family members.

Concepts covered are:

  1. Factors that shape our children’s reaction to foster siblings.
  2. The common emotional trajectory of our children to foster siblings.
  3. Positive impact of fostering on our children.
  4. Negative impact of fostering on our children, including secondary trauma.
  5. Tangible ways to support our children through the fostering process to mitigate burnout.

Claudia Mercier, MSW, is passionate about addressing children’s behavioral challenges, particularly trauma-related behaviors. Claudia and her husband have a large foster adopted family with seven children ranging from 4-26 years old.  They have fostered children for over 15 years while raising 5 children born into their family. Approximately 4 1/2 years ago, Claudia launched The Foster Village, a ministry  in the East Bay that encourages people to foster and then wraps around and supports those families. The group started off with two families and now has nearly 300 families involved in the ministry. Claudia also facilitates the monthly Support Group in Walnut Creek for foster, adoptive and kinship parents.

For virtual childcare during the training, please reach out to judy@helponechild.org for a one to one virtual volunteer match for your child with one of our vetted volunteers.  Your child will need a device.  Please reach out no later than five days prior.

Please complete the training evaluation after attending to request a two-hour certificate.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]
