Parenting Classes Program Description

Help One Child network families are trained to help each child meet the expectation that they become respectful, responsible and able to sustain healthy relationships. Our ministry offers educational events throughout the year, featuring respected professionals in a broad range of topics meaningful to the parent of an at-risk child. Educational seminars, CPR & 1st Aid Trainings and Parent Child Connection Meetings are offered at-cost or for free to foster parents.

Shame: The Underlying Driver of Defensiveness

Led by Dr. Don Williams

Saturday, May 2, 2015

Kids with self-regulation difficulties almost always have a secondary problem with shame, because these children mess up more than the average kid and are consequently corrected more.  Their shame and discouragement usually manifest in avoidance and defensiveness.  They can lose face easily, so that the processes of correction and instruction can elicit more shame, even with the most benevolent of deliveries.  In order to help children regulate shame, without inadvertently adding to it, it is important to take a look under the hood, so to speak, in order to recognize the shame and its biological drivers in the midst of the child’s defensiveness.

Reset Day for Parents – Life is a Dash*

Led by JoAnne Morris

Reset Day was a workshop focusing on better self care for the foster or adoptive parent, what healthy attachment looks like to the child, and expectations we hold for our children. JoAnne Morris drew helpful concepts on these subjects from the best Help One Child presenters over the past 22 years.  Parents had an opportunity to privately consider changes they may want to make in the New Year.
