About our Speakers:

Jim Harlow, MA, LPC-Intern, Child Development Fellow

Jim Harlow is an adoptive father of 5 children who came into his family at various ages from 3 months to 15 years.  They came out of differing levels of trauma and abuse and carried many issues related to their backgrounds.  These children are now ages 29-47 and have, in large measure, defined much of his life, skills, and interests.

Jim returned for post-graduate work after being self-employed for over 30 years, desiring to be able to utilize his experience to help and encourage others who have adopted with the challenges that they face.    He received his M.A. in Counseling in 2009 from Dallas Baptist University and worked with adults with mental illness for 18 months before coming to the TCU Institute for Child Development.  He works at the ICD as a trainer, instructing parents and professionals in Trust-Based Relational Intervention^® techniques.

His years as an adoptive father give him unique insights into both the joys of adoption as well as the stresses it can bring.   Having been in adoption circles for over 30 years, he has a good grasp of the various streams of thought regarding the effects of trauma on the children.  Because of this longevity in the field, he is able to discern and speak to many of the deeper challenges presented by parenting this distinct population.

Henry Milton,  MS, Child Development Fellow

Henry Milton is a Child Development Fellow with the Institute of Child Development, hired by Dr. Purvis and Dr. Cross to conduct trainings and workshops over Trust-Based Relational Intervention^® (TBRI^®) techniques.

He has 15 years of experience in mental health care, residential care, inpatient psychiatry, Prevention/Management of Aggressive behavior instructor, Mental Health trainer, researcher, treatment plan designer and addiction counselor.    While studying for his Bachelors in Psychology, Henry began working with at-risk youth in summer youth camps as a camp counselor, which is when his motivation to work professionally with youth began.   He believes the key motivator for him is the relationships he builds with the youth he serves.   Henry currently resides in Fort Worth, with his wife Amani Milton-Terrell, MD and their children: Elijah 5yrs old and Micah 2 yrs old.   Henry earned his B.S. from Texas A&M University-Commerce, TX with a major in Psychology and went on to complete his masters from Capella University in Psychology.
